4 Free Marketing Methods That Work

There are many Marketing Methods and Strategies that you can use to promote your business and or products. My favourite ones are the free ones. Let me share with you an internet marketing sales training I attended not so long ago, about the 4 free marketing methods that work.

1. Article Marketing

Article Marketing is very powerful. Write articles about your business and product. Brand yourself as someone knowledgeable, an expert in your field. At the end of your article you include a back-link to your website, where they can receive more information about your business. You could also write about your competition. Be ware though, don't slaughter them, simply write about the business opportunity, then finish your article by saying something like: 'In my personal opinion this is not a bad opportunity however, there are plenty of opportunities out there, like the company I joined. We call this reverse marketing. Very effective. Why? Because the person who found your article is most likely thinking about starting a home business. There are plenty of trainings available on the internet, teaching you to write good quality articles.

2. Video Marketing

Just like article marketing but then visual, including audio and video. Produce a video about your business or product and upload to the popular video sites like YouTube, MetaCafé, DailyMotion etc... . Make sure to include a back-link to your landing page. You can also make a video about the competition. When doing so, the same rules apply here, as they do to Article Marketing. I find this method to be very effective too; it brings qualifying traffic to your website.

3. Blogging & Forums

Of course, in this internet marketing sales training, another one of the free marketing methods that work is Blogging and the participation in Forums. Start a blog on your website. Choose a topic that you like to write about and start posting it to your blog. Make sure to post regular updates with good quality postings. Over time you will see that visitors are coming back and enjoy reading your posts. Ensure to include a back link to your landing page to keep that traffic coming. Participate in forums like Wahm. Expose yourself and join the conversations on the many different topics. Become an expert!

4. Social Networking

I have stopped counting the amount of Social Networks on the internet. I personally have a public profile on about 45 social networks, but the main sites are Facebook, MySpace, Squidoo, Twitter, Hi5 and Bebo. Like I said, there are many, many more! So, start a profile page on social networking sites and begin to create your network of people. One thing you need to keep in mind is the Social aspect of these sites. Don't spam about your business all over the place. Once you establish a relationship with someone, they will ask you at some point: 'What is it you do?' Then you can begin talking about your business. People will come to you. Become the hunted, not the hunter.

In this internet marketing sales training I have described the 4 free marketing methods that work. In order to drive traffic there are plenty of other methods to use such as Pay Per Click, Google Adsense and Bannering. You will need to be careful here though because, unless you really know what you are doing, you don't even wanna start thinking about utilising these methods or you could be out of pocket in no time.

Make Money With FREE Marketing

Let's start with the RIGHT question

Before we get into this, let me ask you a question

What one thing would do the most for your business?

Is it,


Getting more clients with your marketing
Getting clients with cheaper marketing
Getting more clients that cost you the least to acquire

Inexpensive Marketing, Low Cost to Buy, or Low Cost to Acquire a Client

I was asked by a local business management group to speak on "Inexpensive marketing." So before we started I felt I had to clarify what they meant by "inexpensive marketing."

First, let's explore our concepts. When the stock market was doing well, 15% a year was considered a good return. Would you invest a dollar in the market to get an ongoing return of $0.15? Or would you invest a dollar into your business that would generate 200%? Or would you rather hold back on the dollar, but invest some of your personal time instead of money. Most people believe that TIME is FREE. I don't believe it is.

Time Isn't Free

Let's say that you make $200 an hour when you are working at "what you do" in your business, or Time billable time. So, if you go out networking (most consider it relatively free) and you might get one client a month. However, you spend 4-5 hours a week, or 20 hours a month to get that client. Although, in your own head you spent nothing up front, it actually cost you 20 hours x $200/hour = $400 to acquire that client. After all, if you could do something else that took that time load off of you, then you'd put the whole 40 hour week into generating $200/hour, or $8,000 a week. There is no free marketing. We just want to find the most effective way to get the most people at the lowest cost "to acquire a client."

Cost to Acquire a Client . . . The Most Important Focus

The cost to acquire a client is different from what we spend up front on our marketing.

The national statistics for marketing costs range from a start up (that becomes successful, that's an important differentiator), typically spends 50% of his first year's profits to acquire clients. So, if he makes a $100K profit, he probably spent around $50K to get it. Some small businesses literally turn white when I say that to them, but let's look at it a different way. Back to that stock market scenario. That's a 200% return on investment. In the stock market would you invest $50K to make $100K? In fact, you'd get excited with that kind of return.

Then why do business owners panic when they hear that they may have to spend $50K in marketing to make $100K return? It's their conditioning. They are so used to managing their check book by "cutting costs" that they aren't looking for the ROI, the Return On Investment.

After the first year of business, the national average for small business marketing to profits heads down to around 25%. It takes more the first year during the startup, but then it can drop, sometimes even more than that.

That means that we have two choices, either spend $25K next year to get $100K, a 400% return on investment, OR, we, again, put our $50K in next year, and generate $200K.

And frankly, I've seen some of my coaching clients hit 10 to 100 times ROI. It's there, we just have to work to find it and make it happen.

Now that I've set some groundwork for this, let's look further. It's all about


What it costs to ACQUIRE the client
Not what our marketing costs up front.

As a business coach, my job is to help clients find those great ROIs and then multiply their results by actually investing in the right place.

There are a couple of business management mindsets that impact most small businesses


Some operate by "cutting expenses".
Some by ROI

A Focus on Cutting Costs -- Wrong Direction

The ones operating with "cutting expenses" frequently are looking for things to cut, and without regard for the ROI, or what it would generate. And there are others looking for what makes them the most and where to spend what they have.

It goes this way, find where you could invest a $1 that would generate $10, then keep looking, find a place that generates $100, and one that generates $1,000. Now we have an easy decision $1 in generates $1,000 out, so let's go invest, and see how much we can invest as a first pass, and then how much of that $1,000 can go back in for the next round. Within weeks we are off scale.

But, as I talk to the other mindset, and share with them the EXACT same scenario and same opportunities, their response will always be: "No, can't spend it," "No, don't have it." It's a killer mindset. It will kill those businesses, I guarantee it.

One of my clients who said "I don't have it" said he had too many bills to pay to be able to invest like that. He had about $20,000 in bills, and had never generated enough money to even break even. In other words, his monthly income was way less than $20,000, so he was always dipping into his pocket to pay the $20K, he was typically bringing in only $15K, and, in his opinion, he just didn't have any money left over to invest in another path. After all, he was always having to come up with another $5K every month out of his pocket.

I showed him that even if he got only a 2:1 return, that if he invested a small amount into marketing that works, that for every $1 spent, he'd have $2 left. In fact, he'd have $20K to pay the bills and another $20K to put into his pocket, a big change from where he'd been. He'd held off spending money he didn't think he had in an effort to save money. In reality that thought was locking him into a loss situation. That tends to be waht I see rampant around small businesses.

From $5K a Month Loss, to $35K a Month Profit . . . in a Week! It's all in the Mind.

We took roughly $4K a week from his income, and generated 2:1 or $8K a week income PLUS the income he already had, which was about $3.5K a week. His income ramped up from $3.5K to $11.5K a week, a 3.3 times increase IN A WEEK. And people tell me all the time, "It's impossible to double my business in a few weeks." In fact, there are so many ways to do it, that this is just one of the many.

It all goes back to the mindset that is keeping our business back. If we believe that "we've got to find the cheapest marketing" frequently we try all of the free ways that aren't working and it's actually costing us BIG BUCKS not only in spending of our time, but in lost revenue.

It may appear that I took you a different direction than was implied by the title, but I didn't. It's all in how we look at costs, and most small businesses are missing the point.

It isn't what it costs up front, it's what it costs to acquire the client. So, don't look at "low cost" or even "free" as being the ultimate cost. it isn't. Look at the bottom line, what does it cost to acquire a client?

A good example was two different clients I had, both small businesses and both had started off our conversation about "free marketing." They both hadn't been very successful.

Mary Kay Rep Goes from 1-2 clients a Year to 71 in Two Weeks . . . It's all in the mindset.

One was a Mary Kay rep who told me she hadn't gotten more than 1-2 clients in a year. Another was another MLM company but certainly doing a lot more business.We built a plan for the Mary Kay rep that showed we probably would be spending about 80c for every lead, and, based on what her sales conversion was it could run between $8 and $80 to land that client, but that she shouldn't look at the upfront cost, but the overall value of that client. When she said the average client would be spending several hundred dollars a year, even the $80 (which was an outside number. It's probably going to be MUCH better) would be workable.

Within 2 weeks she had 71 people. In two weeks she had 71 times what she had the whole last year, and now she had a plan that would continue delivering at that rate for the whole next year. By the way, she won an award for outselling all other Mary Kay reps in the area. Her year is going to be phenomonal.

Now, on to the next MLM, not an Mary Kay rep. I showed her that her costs probably would be closer to $0.05 each and that there were actually 1,300 people already looking for what she did. She ran the figures in her head, and said, she couldn't afford it, even knowing that her Mary Kay rep friend had just acquired 71 new clients in two weeks.

I showed her that with her present approach, she was paying $2,400 a month for a building and generating only 1 new sale a day, so it was costing her $2,400 to get 20 new clients,or $120 each, and that we could add another 50 to 100 a month at only $0.05 for the lead and probably less than $1 to acquire the client. She just couldn't bring herself to spend money on marketing. In her head she had to spend her money on the $2,400 for the building rental.

Generate Leads With Free Marketing

Today I'm going to talk about Free Marketing and how exactly do it works. This article is really useful for those with a tight budget on marketing their products online. Generally when you have money to put ads on Google AdWords, on some advertising sites in the internet, e.g. AdEngage, Businessforsale, Yuwie, and so on, that's better.

But do you guys know the truth about what's going on? Most of the top earners in the industry of Internet Marketing use Zero-Cost Marketing or Free Marketing to generate their free leads. 80% of them did. So what about you? Are you interested in making huge money for free? I'm going to teach you how to do just that. I'm going to talk about Article Marketing, Web 2.0 using Facebook, MySpace, Twitter (The Top 3 Social Media Sites), Video Marketing, Forum Marketing, How to Create Squidoo Lenses, and more. So I'm going to divide it into parts, this is the first one, so make sure you follow up to the second one that I'm going to write.

First off, we're going to start with the popular thing called Article Marketing. By the name, you guys should be able understand that we're going to do marketing using articles. Correct. I'm going to teach you on how to write a good article. Writing an article is easy, writing a good one is not, writing one that will support your Free Marketing is kind of harder. But don't worry; I'll make sure you got it.

1. Define Your Reader/Audience

Every article has its own specific reader; animators don't read about SEO articles, got it? So you have to define what kinds of audience or reader you want to read your article. First, you got to be specific. "People who wants to be success" is a very broad term, you may want to narrow it a bit, and e.g. "finding success online" that is narrower, got it? Second, you can use questions to determine your audience.

1. What do they do for a living?

2. What business do they want to focus on?

3. What problems do they face? (This is the best one)

4. What are their values?

5. What is their current income?

6. And so on.

You should spend some time on defining your audience here because it is really an important aspect in Article Marketing.

2. Choose Your Keyword

Use specific keyword (longer), you should try using "The Best Online Business" rather than "Online Business". Do a keyword research; go to Google and put in "free keywords tracker" and you will get one site that allows you to track keyword. For example, put in "Online Business" in the field and hit enter. You'll get "Online Business", "Going out of Business Sales Online", "Online Business Opportunity", "Online Business Optimization", and many more. There!! You have it, thousands of keywords to choose from so that will be the keywords you're going to choose from. So "Online Business" will be your base keyword, everybody got it? Keyword is really important because you are using Free Marketing which means you will be competing with all the people in this world but I believe you can.

3. Choose Your Topic

Once you have your keyword, choose a topic specifically related to that keyword. For example, if your keyword is "Top Online Home Based Business Opportunity", than your topic could be "What Is the Top Online Home Based Business Opportunity". That's it. It's that simple and now you have your topic in hand, you're one step closer to use articles for your Free Marketing Campaign.

4. Write Your Article

Writing articles is way easier than you think. Your goal is to complete this step in 30 minutes or less. Do not worry about making your article perfect. Failing forward is the best way to be great in this industry. The most important thing you can do is just sit down and start writing. Here's how to do it quickly:

* Make a list of 3 main points that you want to be in your article (one sentence each).

* Write down 3 to 4 sentences that backup each of your three main points that you just made.

* Your three main points will be used as the first sentence of three paragraphs.

* The 4 sentences you wrote will make up the body of each paragraph.

You now have 3 paragraphs, and what's left is only an introduction paragraph. Write 3-4 sentences that sum up your three main paragraphs. This will be your introduction paragraph. Sum it up. Write a 2-3 sentences that sum up your three main points, and gives people the final solution.

If you are writing a problem/solution driven article, you want to reiterate your audience's problem. This is effective, because your audience thinks, "This person is just like me". That will be really great.

5. Write Your Title

Once you have your article ready, you want to create a compelling title by following these key points:

* Whenever possible, include your entire keyword in the title.

* Move your keyword as close to the beginning of the title as possible.

* If you are doing a review or comparison article, don't reveal "the end of the story" or your final opinion in the title. People will be less inclined to click on your article and read the rest. They are human, remember! Just like you.

6. Distribute Your Article

There are a lot of article sites on the internet for you to submit on. I'll give you some; you just need to write in the names that I gave you on Google, and search for the URL.

7. Submitting To Many Article Sites In One Click (Optional)

This step is entirely optional. Now think like this, if you're doing articles, you would want to submit to many articles directories that exists in the internet and if you have to manually submit each of your article to all of the directories, let's just say about 20 sites. That could be really troublesome. For that problem, I use a tool called ArticleSubmitAuto, it's really great and I really recommend you to use it. I could submit to many articles directories in a single click, that saves me time and remember time is not money, time is more valuable than money.

Small businesses owners have a unique marketing opportunity right now! There are literally hundreds of ways to do free marketing, including free blogs and websites, article marketing, social networking and even ordering free hard copy materials. This article will go over my favorite online and offline ideas for how to increase your small business marketing budget by using free marketing sources.

Here are my 5 favorite How To Do Free Marketing ideas:

Use Survey Monkey to find out the hot topics that your customers are interested in! If you THINK you know what your customers are interested in purchasing, I bet you are wrong! The only way to find out what they really want to know about is to ask! I did a survey recently asking my clients what their most pressing marketing needs were and found out that a full seventy five percent of the small business owners and entrepreneurs who responded said that their greatest need was to know how to utilize free websites to grow their businesses. That allowed me to structure a campaign based on using that keyword in conjunction with free marketing (a runner-up) to produce content I know my clients will like!

Bringing us to to number two on my list of free marketing ideas - free websites! I use Weebly to make my free websites as they have a great little blog feature built right in. Now I use Weebly and other free sites like Squidoo to drive traffic TO my main site BUT if you have no website or blog at all this is a great place to start! Make sure you have great content and that you update your free sites or blogs regularly so that it doesn't get stale.

Once you have an idea what to sell and a place to put it online, the next thing I do to enhance my free marketing efforts is to send out email newsletters. Now technically this is free since you could use your normal email client like AOL, gmail or outlook BUT I don't recommend it! What I do recommend is using a service like Aweber or Constant Contact to manage your email newsletters. I KNOW - not free but at $20 per month, pretty darn close.

Now that you know what to sell, have a site or blog to sell it on and have a way to communicate to your clients, you can start social networking. Social Networking is free with Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter being the big three that I focus on when doing my social networking. They make it VERY easy to communicate with past and potential clients in order to increase your online marketing reach. Facebook is great for B2C and B2B marketing, LinkedIn is good for B2B and employment networking and Twitter is just good overall for generating a large following of people who are interested in what you have to say.

My last free marketing tip is to write articles like this one! Writing articles allows you to become an expert in your field and also allows you generate incoming links to your website through the use of your resource box.
